These were generally French percussion muzzle-loading rifles from the 1840s, 1853s, and 1857s, converted to accept the Snider breech-loading system beginning 1867, allowing the acceptance of a cartridge (later a shot-shell usually in 10 or 12 gauge, Hesse Model H91 semi auto rifle. 7×62 NATO.
